TableStudio vs DataGrip

DataGrip is JetBrains' full SQL IDE, with built-in MCP tools and agent skills, sold by subscription for commercial work. TableStudio is a native Mac client you buy once, with staged production changes, dry runs, undo, local servers and Postgres tuning.

DataGrip is a full SQL IDE from JetBrains, and since 2026 it gives coding agents its connections through built-in MCP tools and agent skills. Choose DataGrip if you spend your day writing complex SQL and want IDE-grade refactoring, inspections and version control, need its many engines, or already pay for JetBrains tools. Choose TableStudio if you want a lighter native Mac app you buy once, with guardrails built for agents that change data, plus local servers and Postgres tuning.

Guardrails that don't depend on clicking Allow

DataGrip asks for your consent before an agent reads or changes schema or data, and JetBrains recommends a read-only database user if you need read-only to be guaranteed. Consent prompts work until the fortieth one, when you click Allow without reading. TableStudio enforces its rules whatever you click:

  • Read-only in the database. Agent reads run in a read-only transaction or session, not behind a dialog.
  • Production can't be changed from the chat. The change is staged as a migration and applied with Touch ID.
  • A dry run you can read. The agent reports the rows a write would change before it happens.
  • Undo for each agent change, foreign-key cascades included.
  • Planted text stays data. Values read from the database come back labelled as untrusted, so a row can't pose as instructions to the agent.

Where DataGrip is stronger

  • The SQL editor. Refactoring that follows a renamed column through your scripts, inspections that catch mistakes as you type, and Git built in.
  • Breadth. Dozens of engines, every desktop platform, and settings shared with the rest of JetBrains' IDEs.
  • Agent integration in the IDE. Claude Agent, Codex and Junie can run in DataGrip's AI chat, and its skills teach agents how to use its database tools.
  • Free for non-commercial use.

Where TableStudio is different

Guardrails that hold whatever the agent does. A consent prompt protects you only as well as you read it, and it's easy to approve on autopilot. TableStudio enforces read-only reads in the database itself. Before a write runs, the agent can dry-run it and report exactly which rows it would change. On production the change doesn't run at all: it's staged as a migration with its reason and SQL, and you apply it with Touch ID. Before any agent change, the rows it touches are saved, so you can undo that one change later.

Guardrails outside MCP too. The plugin stops psql, mysql and 17 migration and seed tools from writing to production from the terminal.

Pay once. $49 for a Lifetime license, with updates for life and no subscription.

It runs and tunes your databases. Start, stop and create Postgres, MySQL, ClickHouse and CockroachDB servers, make throwaway sandbox copies, see what each database spends its time on with Query Insights, and on PostgreSQL find missing indexes with the Index Advisor.
