TableStudio vs DBeaver

DBeaver is a free, open-source, cross-platform client that connects to almost anything, with AI chat and MCP in its paid editions. TableStudio is a native Mac app for eight engines, built to let coding agents change data safely.

DBeaver is the Swiss Army knife of database clients: free, open source, cross-platform, and able to connect to nearly any database. Choose DBeaver if you need an engine TableStudio doesn't cover, work on Windows or Linux, want a free tool, or run a team on CloudBeaver. Choose TableStudio if you live on a Mac and want a native app, or coding agents like Claude Code, Codex or Cursor change data in your databases.

Agent safety in every license, not an enterprise add-on

DBeaver's MCP support lives in its commercial products, CloudBeaver Enterprise, Team Edition and the dbvr CLI, where an agent is limited by the database user's permissions and the team's connection settings. TableStudio puts its guardrails in every license and enforces them on top of whatever the login allows:

  • Access per database. Off, Structure only, Read, or Read & write, chosen in TableStudio rather than in the database's grants.
  • Production changes staged for review, with the reason, SQL and affected rows, applied with Touch ID.
  • Dry runs against the real rows, so the agent and you know what a write would change.
  • Undo for each agent change, with the rows saved first.
  • The Agent Center, with every conversation from every agent, and what TableStudio stopped and why.

Where DBeaver is stronger

  • Breadth and price. DBeaver Community is free, runs on every desktop platform, and connects to more databases than nearly any other client.
  • Mature tooling. Its ER diagrams, data transfer, data compare and SQL editor have been refined for years, and its plugin ecosystem is large.
  • Teams. CloudBeaver and Team Edition give a team shared connections, central admin and audit logging in the browser.

Where TableStudio is different

It's a Mac app. TableStudio opens fast, follows Mac conventions, keeps passwords in your Keychain, puts every action behind ⌘K, and makes your tables and saved queries searchable from Spotlight and Raycast.

Agents that change data, safely, in every license. Reads are read-only in the database. A write can be dry-run against the real rows to report what it would change. On production the change is staged as a migration with its reason and SQL, and you apply it with Touch ID. Before any agent change the rows it touches are saved, so that one change can be undone. The plugin also stops psql, mysql and migration tools from writing to production from the terminal.

It runs and tunes your databases. Start, stop and create Postgres, MySQL, ClickHouse and CockroachDB servers, make throwaway sandbox copies, and on PostgreSQL find missing indexes from your real workload.
